What You Need to Register a Vehicle
Registration Renewal
- Current registration
- Current mileage of vehicle
- Proof of insurance
- Must be in effect on day of registration
- Must identify the vehicle being registered as the insured vehicle
- Payment – Cash, Check or Credit Card (2.5% convenience fee added)
In-State Dealer Sale/Lease
- Blue Application for Title (vehicle year 1995 or newer)
- Monroney (Window) Sticker (new vehicles only)
- Invoice from dealer showing payment of Maine sales tax
- Current mileage of vehicle
- Proof of insurance
- Must be in effect on day of registration
- Must identify the vehicle being registered as the insured vehicle
- Payment – Cash, Check or Credit Card (2.5% convenience fee added)
Out-of-State Dealer Sale/Lease
- Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) or title of the vehicle
- Monroney (Window) Sticker (new vehicles only)
- Bill of Sale of Lease Agreement
- Proof of insurance
- Must be in effect on day of registration
- Must identify the vehicle being registered as the insured vehicle
- Payment – Cash, Check or Credit Card (2.5% convenience fee added)
Private Sale
- Bill of Sale
- Must include year, make, model, serial number, current mileage, date of sale, statement indicating the amount of the sale, and to whom the vehicle is being sold
- Must be signed by the seller
- Previous owner’s Original Title Certificate with printed name and address (vehicle year 1995 or newer)
- Back side of title must be fully completed by the seller, showing who the vehicle is being sold to, current mileage, and date of sale
- Must be signed by each individual listed on the front of the title
- The title must be free of liens
- Proof of insurance
- Must be in effect on day of registration
- Must identify the vehicle being registered as the insured vehicle
- Payment – Cash, Check or Credit Card (2.5% convenience fee added)
